This page describes the current product scope for Patterbook, which is still in development. A final privacy policy will be published before an App Store release and checked against the shipped app.

CURRENT SCOPEUpdated October 18, 2026
01

Where entries are kept

The current build stores children’s profiles, written moments, and attached photos or recordings in local app storage on your iPhone. Local capture and file sharing need no sign-in. There is no separate Patterbook password account or Patterbook-operated journal server.

iOS device backup behavior is controlled by Apple and the settings on your device. This page does not promise that data can never be included in an Apple device backup.

02

Optional sync and shared journals

Optional iCloud sync and private adult journals are being prepared. They are not available in the current preview. When available, enabling iCloud will send the chosen journal, profiles and media to Apple using your existing Apple account. Invited adults can access the whole shared journal, and editors can change or delete records. Removing access cannot recall copies already downloaded or exported.

Voice notes remain audio. Automatic transcription is not included.

03

Backups and copies

Patterbook creates a .zip backup file on your device. It is a ZIP archive with an archive.json file containing profile and moment records and an attachments folder for saved photos and audio. Patterbook does not password-protect or encrypt this export. Choose a trusted place to save it. Anyone with the file may be able to inspect its contents.

You choose where an exported file is saved or shared using iOS. The app can restore a Patterbook archive and import supported older JSON backup files. Selected PDF, browser-package and slideshow exports are separate copies. Review which moments, names, dates, notes and media to include. Recipients can keep or forward the files. A family package can be reviewed and added to a journal without replacing the existing archive. Removing Patterbook from a device can remove its local data, so export a backup first if you want a separate copy.

04

Permissions

Photo selection uses the iOS photo picker when you choose an image. Microphone access is requested if you choose to record audio. Anniversary reminders are optional and off by default. If you turn them on in Settings, Patterbook asks iOS for notification permission and schedules one-time local reminders for upcoming anniversaries of saved moments. Their general wording never includes a child’s name or saved words. Reminder planning stays on your device. There is no push-notification server. Turning reminders off removes Patterbook’s pending and delivered anniversary notifications. If access is denied, manage it in iPhone Settings.

05

Support and the final policy

A support contact and the complete release privacy policy will be published before launch. There is no support email or public App Store privacy label to link to yet.

This page describes the product as it is currently being built. The release policy will be updated to match the final app, its platform behavior, and any included software.
